"For the First Time in My Adult Life..." Magnet

There's something almost Shakespearian about the tendency of politicians to define themselves, unintentionally, in an unguarded moment. Mrs. Obama’s proclamation, implying that her husband was the only good thing to come out of America (and coupled with the delicious detail about her "adult life"--as if traditional patriotism were the domain of children) is an example on a par with Nixon's "I am not a crook" and Clinton’s "It depends on what your definition of "is" is. In turning this around, we are acknowledging, as well as protesting, the profound shift that has happened with the advent of the current administration.

There have been better presidents and worse as well as differing degrees of conservatism/liberalism. But we've never had an administration which was so essentially anti-American. Far more than just mimicking Mrs. Obama’s statement, we are attempting here to grasp a paradox wherein the government has become the antithesis of the country; where patriotism has been redefined (by the vice-president who, like a Greek oracle, seems profound in his very lack of sophistication) as paying higher taxes; and where, as Rush Limbaugh found out, confusing the president's successful destruction with the country's successful survival is an administration/press objective. This seems to capture what many of us feel.
