Fools & Global Warming Bumper Sticker

For the record, I may be a right wing-libertarian extremist, but I do not believe in conspiracy theories (no offense!).  It’s not that there aren’t plenty of bad people out there who would love to orchestrate conspiracies, but by and large such people, especially in government, are too stupid and ham fisted to pull it off.  To really carry out a conspiracy you have to be diabolically clever and subtle.  Government, by contrast, is big and dumb and clumsy.

Likewise, there is an art to believing in conspiracy theories and it essentially consists of twisting every fact that comes along to fit your pre-existing concept.  There are no witnesses to something that must have involved hundreds of people: the CIA killed them all!  The physical evidence all proves the theory is wrong: The police altered all the physical evidence! Meanwhile your conspiracy gets more and more unwieldy as more and more people must be brought into it.  This is pretty much the opposite of the dictum presented to us as Oakum’s Razor, wherein we are cautioned to accept the simplest possible explanation for observed phenomena.

Something very similar is at work with “global warming”.  We have a hot day: Global warming!  We have a cold day: Global temperature change!  It’s cold for 10 straight years: we learn (after the fact of course) that it is the nature of global warming to go on vacation for a decade.  But that just means that it’s going to be tanned rested and ready when it comes back with a vengeance!...next year?  There is a certain type of person who will opt for this explanation every time.  Some may be political or financial opportunists like Al Gore.  But many just need to have something to believe in.  And, with the break-down of traditional religious faith, the left felt obliged to give them a new, secular, belief system.
